More Tweedy DVD stuff

I haven't posted much lately (or at all for that matter), but that's partly because i've been busy listening to The Hold Steady's 'Boys and Girls in America' over and over again. Oh, and attempting to study.

But in between all that I gave this video from Jeff Tweedy's forthcoming DVD a few watches. It's pretty good and kinda makes me look forward to the DVD. Although, like with most music DVD's i'll probably end up watching it once and then putting it on the shelf.

Boys and Girls and Jeff Tweedy in America

A double dose of YouTube today. First of all the Hold Steady performing 'Stuck between stations', which is the first track on their upcoming album, Boys and Girls in America. It's been a long time since I've looked forward to an album as much as I am this one. October 3, mark it down!

Secondly, here is the trailer for "Sunken Treasure: Jeff Tweedy - Live in the Pacific Northwest". Taken during a recent tour this will apparently feature Tweedy playing Wilco, Loose Fur and even some Uncle Tupelo material. Music is his saviour and he was named by rock and roll.

Dan Kelly -> Neil Young -> Stephen Colbert

Some people may have seen this info in various sources already, but I only really heard Dan Kelly's new album recently. I won't bother you with a review of Paul Kelly's nephews latest offering, but will rather talk about one track off it: Drunk on Election Night.

Basically this track does a good job of tapping into the zeitgeist (I feel really swarmy using that word, but fuck it!) of many of our disillusionment and feelings of helplessness with those "cocksucking motherfuckers darkening our times". But don't take my word for it, just ask Neil Young. The track is currently sitting at 181 in his list of 'Songs of the times'. Now, who are you to disagree with Neil?

You can hear the song streaming on Neil Youngs site, here:

Neatly segwaying into more old news, Young appeared on the Colbert Report last month which was quite entertaining.

My band is better than your band. Sing it!

So it seems that Andy Falcous and Jack William Egglestone of Mclusky fame have teamed up with Kelson Louis Tregurtha Mathias (what a name!) to form 'Future of the left'.

Between these guys and Jon Chapple's 'Shooting at unarmed men' there's plenty of stuff out there for anyone still mourning the death of Mclusky. The stage is also set for some "my band is better than your band" action. Having only heard a little of each, I can only say that I think Chapple and Co. are winning purely through having a slightly better name.

'Shooting at unarmed men' are also of particular interest for any fellow Melbournite fans of the Welsh trio out there as Chapple has essentially set up a Melbourne based 'franchise' of his band. With him playing with different lineup's whether he is in the Northern or Southern hemisphere. The Melbourne version consists of Chapple teaming up with 'The Cheats'.

Tracks from both projects can be heard at their respective MySpace presences:

Chips Ahoy! - The Hold Steady

I've been in love with the Hold Steady ever since i saw them live at the St. Jerome's Laneway festival here in Melbourne a few months back. Very soon after I devoured everything on both their debut, 'Almost killed me', and their follow-up, 'Separation Sunday'. Something about the combination of Craig Finn's whiney, almost peewee herman-esque narrative combined with the formidable rock backing really resonated with me.

I'm a big big fan of music that tells a story. You may argue that all music does this in some way but I like a song with characters, and a plot. Perhaps I should just read a book, but what book rocks as hard as the Hold Steady?

Anyway, to the topic at hand, Pitchfork is hosting an exclusive download of the first single from their upcoming album, Boys and Girls in America. I've been listening to this non-stop since I downloaded it earlier today and I suggest anyone reading this does the same.
